By Robert Yaniz Jr.
It’s beginning to look a lot like awards season, and as such, the screeners have already begun pouring in, thanks to my membership in the Online Film Critics Society. So, in addition to trimming the tree, roasting those chestnuts and all that, I’ll be embracing the month of December this year in an entirely new way.
In the interest of challenging myself and in a last-ditch effort to catch up with the year’s most popular, critically acclaimed and/or otherwise notable releases, I will be posting a new film review every single day from December 1 until it’s time to ring in 2019. Yes, you read that right. Every. Single. Day. And these won’t be ones I’ve already seen. I’m talking about first-time watches only. I can’t promise they will be the most elaborate responses, but the goals here are very clear:
- As mentioned, I am aiming to clear up any blindspots (yes, including Blindspotting) from my cinematic rearview for 2018. This will make my year-end list that much more comprehensive. Stay tuned for that, of course, as always.
- With the Crooked Table Podcast returning in full force this month, the deluge of fresh content will hopefully give you the readers/listeners lots to look forward to and give you newbies a sense of what the Crooked Table and my writing specifically is all about.
- Personal challenges are good for the soul, and since my creative writing has been perpetually frozen (a fact that I will be changing come early 2019), consider this holiday binge a cinephile NaNoWriMo: an easy way to push my limits and shake off that nasty habit of overthinking every post I write.
That being said, I have an extensive list of films that I want to try and get to. So many, in fact, that I cannot hope to make time for all of them. I’ll be hitting a number of different genres and including films available in theaters, streaming and released on Blu-Ray/digital. It’ll be a veritable potpourri of 2018 releases, and I can’t wait to get started.
Want to make the case for your favorite 2018 film and ensure that it gets considered for my Favorite Films of 2018 list? Send me a suggestion on Twitter @crookedtable, and I’ll be sure to add it to my queue.
Buckle in. It’s going to be an interesting month.
