The exact reason behind this continues to elude me, but it does seem like it’s become harder and harder for Hollywood to create truly great comedies. In any given year, there’s usually only a couple that I see that are worthy of recommending. Even then, they usually wind up with a specific hook that ties closely to my interests (the musical comedy of Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, for example) or represent a kind of genre mash-up (the intergalactic silliness of Thor: Ragnarok). So that’s why Game Night is such a welcome surprise.
Following an ensemble centering on Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, the film may not break any new ground. However, it does deliver on what it sets out to provide: escapism, laughs and fun, memorable characters. Before I saw the film, I was intrigued by the trailer and the talent involved, and though I don’t foresee it evolving into one of my favorite films of the year or anything, it’s certainly a fun time at the movies and a rare bright spot (aside from Paddington 2 and the outstanding Black Panther in this first quarter of 2018). On behalf of Monkeys Fighting Robots, I shared my thoughts on the film this week.
Head on over to Monkeys Fighting Robots for my full written review of Game Night and decide for yourself if you want to see the film.
