By Robert Yaniz Jr.
Crooked Sightings highlights the work of Robert Yaniz Jr. that has been published outside the realm of CrookedTable.com.
We’ve only a fortnight — a fancy Middle English term for a two-week period that, frankly, I’ve been searching for an opportunity to use — until Hollywood’s elite gather together to congratulate each other on their annual achievements. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen: Oscar night is upon us! And I, for one, could not be more excited to see which film walks away with the Best Picture statuette. Granted, the chances are slim that we’re in store for a shock of Envelope-gate proportions. Still, the pop culture student in me is undoubtedly stoked to see how this year’s race will shake out in the end.
Having finally caught up with all the nominated films, I took the time recently to place the nine 2018 contenders in my own personal ranking over on Monkeys Fighting Robots. As the piece itself explains, this order is partly influenced by my own personal enjoyment of each film — to be fair, none are out-and-out bad in my eyes, though some are more my speed than others — and whether each film is indicative of the year in cinema as well as the current social and political (hard to avoid these days, isn’t it?) landscape. I took a similar approach back in 2016 both in a feature for Cheat Sheet and a series of video reviews over on the Crooked Table YouTube channel. So I’m happy to be reviving it this awards season.
To check out my ranking of the 2018 Best Picture nominees, head on over to Monkeys Fighting Robots!
